The Microsoft Genuine Software Initiative

Posted under General

?‚? It is said that the key to reducing software piracy is by educating the public. Once people have been educated on the effects of software piracy, they are less likely to take?‚? part in this mass epidemic.?‚?
The Microsoft?‚? Genuine Software Initiative (GSI)?‚?  focuses the company?˘?‚¬?„˘s many activities and investments directed at combating software counterfeiting and other forms of software piracy into a single initiative. The initiative will focus increasing investments across three strategic areas: Education, Engineering, and Enforcement.

SIIA Anti-Piracy Program

Posted under General

I?˘?‚¬?„˘ve been very impressed with the work that the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) has been doing regarding anti-piracy. I think it goes a long way to show how seriously software piracy is being taken and how important it is for the industry to fight this epidemic. In 2006, the SIIA launched the Auction Litigation Program which monitors popular online auction sites, identifying individuals or groups selling pirated software and prosecuting those pirates on behalf of the association?˘?‚¬?„˘s member companies. Reducing software prices could lead to a reduction piracy rates

Posted under General

Reducing software prices could lead to a reduction piracy rates. According to research house IDC, which was commissioned to conduct the study, the average selling price of software was one of several components used to estimate revenue losses. So, logically, increases in software prices would inflate revenue losses. However, Walter Lee, IDC’s Asia-Pacific vice president of consulting, was hesitant to draw that conclusion, noting that some software vendors increase their prices when they bundle several applications and offer these as one software package.?‚?

Some have long argued that piracy can be dramatically reduced if only software vendors were more willing to bring down their prices and make software more affordable to the masses. As it is, some of Asia’s developing markets find it tough to cope with rising hardware requirements.

Study reveals social information about software piracy

Posted under General & Hints & Tips

A new study has revealed interesting social information about software and movie piracy.?‚?  New academic research suggests that neither social norms nor the threat of lawsuits are enough to keep college students from illegally downloading music.

The study, which appeared in the most recent issue of Cyberpsychology & Behavior, provides no answers to a music industry that is desperately seeking ways to put the brakes on file-sharing. It does suggest that such sharing doesn’t hurt the music business, though; according to the authors, “downloading intentions also had no direct relationship to either compact disc purchases or to subscriptions to online paid music services.”

Posted under General & Industry News

Hong Kong Persecutes notorious software pirates.?‚?  Three men, aged 26, 35 and 38, who contravened the Copyright Ordinance and Organized and Serious Crimes Ordinance were today (May 28) given prison sentences ranging from 31.5 to 73.5 months by the District Court. The 73.5 months’ sentence is the heaviest of its kind so far.

Three men were arrested during a Customs anti-piracy crackdown, codenamed “Operation Glacier” on August 4, 2005, for operating a pirated disc replicating workshop, two storage centers and three retail outlets.

Software Piracy in the Middle East

Posted under General & Industry News

Software Piracy is still dominant in the Middle East. Two out of every three computers in Kuwait still use illegal software despite a 2 percent decline in software piracy in 2006, Kuwait Times reported on Sunday.

Citing a statement issued by U.S.-based Business Software Alliance (BSA), the report said much more needs to be done by Kuwait to reduce the 2006 piracy rate of 64 percent, including public awareness initiatives and the creation of “strong and workable” local anti-piracy laws.

However, the group meanwhile pointed out that software piracy in Kuwait “experienced a 2 percent decrease between 2005 and 2006, protecting more than 5 million U.S. dollars in software revenue.”

Kuwait was one of 15 Mideast countries to experience a decrease in piracy rates in 2006, the Times quoted BSA as saying.

Losses from software piracy in the Mideast totaled almost 2 billion dollars in 2006, an increase of 382 million from 2005, it added.

Posted under General & Industry News

The four countries with the biggest percentage declines in piracy were China, where 86% of all software sold is pirated, down 4 percentage points from the 90% of 2004; Russia, down 4 percentage points to a piracy rate of 83%; Ukraine, down 6 percentage points to a piracy rate of 85%, and Morocco, down 4 percentage points to a piracy rate of 68%.By contrast, the

United States had the lowest software piracy rate in the world last year at 21%. However, that amounted to $6.9 billion in losses to software manufacturers, the highest of any country because the U.S. market for computer software is so large. The countries with the lowest piracy rates were the United States, 21%; New Zealand, 23%; Austria, 26%, and

Finland
, 26%.
The lost sales in China totaled $3.9 billion, putting it in second place in dollar losses followed by
