Bill Gates Praises Anti-Piracy Efforts in Indonesia

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates has praised Indonesia?’?‚¬?„’s efforts to prevent software piracy, which has been reflected in the removal of the country from the world?’?‚¬?„’s high priority piracy watch list. The government is monitoring compliance with licensing requirements in government offices and big businesses.

Gates has also been discussing with the Indonesian government the possibility of boosting the national education system with over million high quality computers at the cost of under $200 a piece, plus free software.

EC Says Software Industry Best Equipped to Tackle Piracy

The responsibility for tackling software piracy lies in the hands of the Internet Service Providers and the studios. This is the European Commission?’?‚¬?„’s position on the subject. A high ranking EC official acknowledged that more action was required to combat software piracy, and that the software and entertainment industry had the best knowledge and tools for the job. The official also suggested that too much legislation was ineffective, and may even be counterproductive.

Selling Unlicensed Software Costs SA Vendors Dearly

Microsoft has reached substantial settlements with 21 vendors in South Africa, who have been selling computers loaded with unlicensed Microsoft software. The actions are part of Microsoft?’?‚¬?„’s Global General Software Initiative.

Software Pirate Gets Long Prison Sentence

A resident of Connecticut was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for violating copyright laws, by building and operating warez sites, used for hosting pirated software.

BSA Cracks down on Software Piracy in Cyprus

A company in Cyprus was fined EUR 20,000 after being caught selling pirated software. The fine came after the Business Software Alliance in Cyprus filed a complaint against the company.

European Parliament Rejects Anti-Piracy Policy

Members of the European parliament have rejected a policy suggestion aimed at tackling software piracy. According to the ?’?‚¬?“three strikes?’?‚¬? policy suggested by the British and French governments, individuals suspected of software piracy would be denied internet access. To implement the policy, Internet Service Providers would have to monitor the internet usage of its subscribers, and in particular the excessive use of peer-to-peer file sharing sites.

Please note: Your copy of MS Office is not Genuine

Users of counterfeit versions of Microsoft Office will see pop-up dialog informing them that their copy is not genuine. The new Microsoft pilot is set to begin in the near future in Spain, Turkey, Italy and Chile. The reminders will continue until the user removes the pirated software and installs a valid copy.

Turkey Extends Fight Against Software Piracy

Turkey plans to tackle software piracy through legislative action, and education for school age children. Prosecutors and judges are receiving special training in the US in order to help with the large number of software piracy cases waiting to go to trial. Turkey’s software industry is worth $1-billion.

Software Pirates Hack Anger Management

Five men in Connecticut have been charged with distributing copyrighted software on the Internet. The group gained access to copyrighted software, such as a DVD of the Movie Anger Management, even before it was available to the general public, hacked the software, and distributed it on the Internet. The men face a fine of $250,000 and five years in prison.
