Global Software Piracy has Remained Static

Posted under Uncategorized

The rate of global software piracy has remained static for three years, but the cost to companies that make the programs is rising, the Business Software Alliance said Tuesday.

The BSA survey, conducted by the U.S.-based market research company IDC, concluded that for every $2 spent on legitimate software, $1 went to pirates.

The report claimed 35 percent of all software installed on personal computers in 2006 was obtained illegally. It estimated software vendors could lose about $180 billion to pirates over the next four years.

Game Makers hit hard by software piracy

Posted under Industry News

Game Makers hit hard by software piracy.?‚?  Getting free games is as easy as going on the Internet.

No, I don?’?‚¬?„’t mean casual games and I don?’?‚¬?„’t mean out-of-print stuff. I?’?‚¬?„’m talking about triple-A games ?’?‚¬?€ new stuff and old favorites.

Internet ?’?‚¬?“pirate?’?‚¬? sites offer ?’?‚¬?“cracked?’?‚¬? versions of the shrink-wrapped, copyright-protected software you get at Best Buy. Most of the time, these pirated games are available free of charge. The people who cracked the game?’?‚¬?„’s copy protection and posted it on a peer-to-peer transfer site didn?’?‚¬?„’t do it to turn a profit. They did it just because they could.

Reducing software prices could lead to a reduction piracy rates

Posted under General

Reducing software prices could lead to a reduction piracy rates. According to research house IDC, which was commissioned to conduct the study, the average selling price of software was one of several components used to estimate revenue losses. So, logically, increases in software prices would inflate revenue losses. However, Walter Lee, IDC’s Asia-Pacific vice president of consulting, was hesitant to draw that conclusion, noting that some software vendors increase their prices when they bundle several applications and offer these as one software package.?‚?

Some have long argued that piracy can be dramatically reduced if only software vendors were more willing to bring down their prices and make software more affordable to the masses. As it is, some of Asia’s developing markets find it tough to cope with rising hardware requirements.

Study reveals social information about software piracy

Posted under General & Hints & Tips

A new study has revealed interesting social information about software and movie piracy.?‚?  New academic research suggests that neither social norms nor the threat of lawsuits are enough to keep college students from illegally downloading music.

The study, which appeared in the most recent issue of Cyberpsychology & Behavior, provides no answers to a music industry that is desperately seeking ways to put the brakes on file-sharing. It does suggest that such sharing doesn’t hurt the music business, though; according to the authors, “downloading intentions also had no direct relationship to either compact disc purchases or to subscriptions to online paid music services.”
