Music Piracy Maybe Overestimated

According to a draft report by the Australian Institute of Criminology, the music industry can’t explain how it arrives at its statistics for staggering losses through piracy. The Business Software Association’s claim of $361m per year in lost sales is “unverified and epistemologically unreliable”, the report says.

Microsoft Builds Tougher Anti-Piracy Protection into Vista

Not only is Windows Vista more secure than Windows XP it is also better protected against piracy. Customers using genuine and licensed copies of Windows Vista will have access to Windows Aero and Windows ReadyBoost features, as well as full functionality of Windows Defender security software and extra optional updates from Windows Update. Systems that fail validation will not have access to these features, although they will still have access to critical security updates.

Gordon Brown Recomends Revising UK Piracy Laws

A series of recommendations surround the flexibilty of intellectual property law include several on fair use; Gowers pushes for an exception to copyright for the purposes of “caricature, parody or pastiche” for example. “Transformative and derivative works”, which use copyrighted material as their basis, should be allowed here as they are in the US, he argues.

If you use Real Player - Update Soon

RealNetworks has patched a vulnerability in its RealPlayer and HelixPlayer software that made it possible for attackers to run arbitrary code on a victim’s machine. The security hole affects applications running on Windows, Mac and Linux platforms.

Software Piracy Hurting the UK Economy

Even though the pound remains strong, software piracy is hurting the economy. The use of pirated software by UK businesses cost local and international software publishers $1.67bn in 2006, according to a study conducted by analyst house IDC and commissioned by the BSA. Symantic Software is being hurt by Pirates

China Confiscates 13 Million Pirated Items

$30 Million US in Pirated Software Sold on Ebay

Koster and Yutaka are to be sentenced by a Wisconsin court in November, along with four other defendants who previously pleaded guilty. Worse case scenario is five years in jail, $250,000 fine and three years supervised release.

All told, nine defendants have been convicted of selling Rockwell software with a net value of $30m over eBay, according to the Department of Justice.

Joining the Wisconsin six are two convictions in Michigan and one conviction in Indiana.

One third of Microsoft Office Copies in the UK are Pirated

In the UK the rate for pirated copies of Windows was only 12% so when a recent study showed that 33% of Microsoft Office users are using illegal copies Microsoft decided to change their anti piracy efforts. From January 2007, Office Update also must be validated by Office Genuine Advantage (OGA). The OGA scheme was introduced in April as a pilot.

Stopping Software Piracy Can Help Revive Economies

A major new economic impact study of 57 countries by IDC on behalf of the Business Software Alliance (BSA) which found 40 per cent of all software breaches copyright. IDC analysts estimate that reducing this figure to a third (30 per cent) could lead to the creation of 1.5 million new jobs, increase economic growth by $400bn and generate $64bn in new taxes.
