Software Maker Gets $150K in Copyright Suit

Posted under Uncategorized

The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the principal trade association for the software and digital content industry, working on behalf of Autodesk Inc., announced today that it has reached a $150,000 agreement to
settle claims for infringement of Autodesk?¢?‚¬?„¢s copyrighted software. The case — Autodesk v.
Florida Benchmark had been filed in February 2007 and was pending before the United States District Court - Northern District of California. In addition to monetary damages, the defendant agreed to other confidential terms for its unauthorized copying and use of multiple Autodesk software products.

Florida Benchmark, Inc. is a mortgage survey company located in Clearwater, FL. SIIA
obtained evidence from multiple sources that Florida Benchmark had installed, and was
using, more copies of Autodesk software than it had licenses. The information gathered
prior to filing indicated that the company?¢?‚¬?„¢s management was fully aware of the problem, but refused to purchase the number of Autodesk licenses necessary to get legal.

Software Hacking Costs $35Bn

Posted under Uncategorized

According to IDC, the Software Lifecycle Management market will reach $1.2 billion by 2010. The reasons? Piracy, evolving sales models, and increased revenue management expectations. Recent industry research estimates that software pirates and hackers steal $35 billion worth of software each year. Securing source code has become mission-critical ?¢?‚¬?€? a simple matter of survival. Savvy software customers are demanding new and innovative packaging and licensing models allow them purchase exactly what they want, when they want it, and use it how they want. And, as the software business grows more complex, real-time sales figures and usage data needs to flow uniformly, enabling decision makers to rapidly adapt in a dynamic market.

Germany Makes Hacking Tools Illegal

Posted under Industry News

Updates to Germany’s computer crime laws banning so-called “hacking tools” have been criticized as ill-considered and counterproductive. The revamp to the German criminal code is designed to tighten definitions, making denial of service attacks and attempts to sniff data on third-party wireless networks, for example, clearly criminal. Attacks would be punishable by a fine and up to 10 years imprisonment. Full Article at http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/05/30/garmany_anti-hacking_law/

Dogs Bringing Down Pirates

Posted under Uncategorized

Malaysian DVD pirates have slapped a bounty on the heads of sniffer dogs which earlier this week helped seize around $3m* in fake DVDs, Reuters reports.

According to The New Straits Times, “syndicate bosses” are none too happy about the olfactory abilities of black Labradors Lucky and Flo, who on Tuesday were involved in the location of “a cache of around a million pirated game and movie discs in the southern city of Johor Baru”.

Six people were cuffed during the operation, which discovered pirate DVDs and copying equipment “hidden in concealed spaces and secret compartments spread over four floors of an office building”.
