Turkey Extends Fight Against Software Piracy

Turkey plans to tackle software piracy through legislative action, and education for school age children. Prosecutors and judges are receiving special training in the US in order to help with the large number of software piracy cases waiting to go to trial. Turkey’s software industry is worth $1-billion.

Software Pirates Hack Anger Management

Five men in Connecticut have been charged with distributing copyrighted software on the Internet. The group gained access to copyrighted software, such as a DVD of the Movie Anger Management, even before it was available to the general public, hacked the software, and distributed it on the Internet. The men face a fine of $250,000 and five years in prison.

SIIA Pays for Information about Software Pirates

The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) is paying individuals who provide information about software piracy. In March alone the Association made seven such payments. Once it receives information about a company or organization that is using software illegally, the SIIA requests an audit, and if software is found to have been used illegally, the offending organization must comply with licensing policies or face a hefty fine.

PointDev Sues Sony BMG for Software Piracy

PointDev, a small French software house, said that it is taking legal action after pirated versions of its software were found on servers in the offices of Sony BMG. PointDev CEO said that time and resources spent safeguarding against software piracy meant less time for software development.

FAST to Pursue Software Pirates

The Federation Against Software Theft (FAST), a British organization combating software piracy, has warned that it will pursue individuals selling illegal copies of software over the Internet. The Federation, which in the 1980s successfully lobbied parliament to have computer programs protected under copyright laws, is taking the same route as the SIIA, which recently filed lawsuits against individuals selling pirated software on eBay.

Educating Employees about Software Piracy

Companies should take action to ensure that their employees are aware of software piracy issues, and are not breaking the law. Measures should include making sure that employees are aware of the company?¢?‚¬?„¢s software acquisition policies, educating them on the definition of software piracy, and appointing a point of contact in the company, who will be responsible for purchasing software licenses.

SIIA Gets Tough on eBay Software Pirates

As part of their campaign to curb software piracy, the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) has filed eight new lawsuits against eBay sellers offering pirated software, bringing the number of similar litigations this year alone to 17. The sellers were deliberately offering pirated copies of Adobe?‚?® and PhotoShop?‚?®, and other software products. SIIA?¢?‚¬?„¢s legal council said that pirated software hurts unwitting customers and legal sellers alike, and that the Association?¢?‚¬?„¢s ?¢?‚¬?“get tough?¢?‚¬? approach will show sellers that are pushing pirated software that their actions will result in fines and potential imprisonment.
